›Symphonic Mob‹ 2020

As the 'Symphonic Mob' had to be cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic in September 2020, we invited musicians of all ages, beginners and professionals, from violin to accordion, to make music with us digitally. After countless registrations and many great video submissions, we can finally present the result: more than 170 musicians singing and playing together the old Berlin hit 'Solang noch untern Linden' by Walter Kollo.

Even if this kind of playing together can't replace the experience of a "real" "Symphonic Mob", it's a nice symbol for staying connected despite all obstacles. We wish you a lot of fun with our #home_edition of the 'Symphonic Mob' and a happy new year! We hope that we can see each other live again next autumn at the 'Symphonic Mob' 2021.

Concert film ›In Exile – of Gods and Men‹, part 3 on Jan 14, 9 pm

On January 14, the DSO will release the third and final part of its extraordinary concert film entitled ‘IM EXIL – VON GÖTTERN UND MENSCHEN’ (In Exile - Of Gods and Men), which was created together with Music Director Robin Ticciati in the Berlin Sisyphos club. The film focuses on Ondřej Adámek’s work ‘Dusty Rusty Hush’, which is embedded in performative improvisations by orchestra members. The production of sounding images was directed by Frederic Wake-Walker.

The finale premieres Thursday, 14 January at 9 pm on the ➔ DSO PLAYER, where all films are available on demand for 30 days free of charge – Parts I and II until 17 January, Part III until 14 February.

Dmytro Popov sings ›Hymns of Love‹

On 20 November, Orchid Classics released the first solo album by Ukrainian tenor Dmytro Popov – with a multifaceted programme of arias that have become particularly dear to him because of their emotionality and which he has interpreted many times in roles at world-renowned opera houses such as the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the London Royal Opera House or the Vienna State Opera. The recording was made together with the DSO and conductor Mikhail Simonyan and presents moving moments of musical theatre, among others from Puccini's 'Tosca' and 'La bohème', Bizet's 'Carmen', Gounod's 'Roméo et Juliette' or Tchaikovsky's 'Eugene Onegin'.

Reichstag Concert with DSO's Brass Quintet

For almost 20 years, the German Bundestag, together with Deutschlandfunk and the DSO, has organised the so-called Reichstag Concerts for invited guests. As none of these concerts could be held this year due to Corona, Parliamentary Television recorded a concert by DSO's brass quintet in front of the advent wreath with varied arrangements of well-known Advent and Christmas music. Concert film ›In Exile – of Gods and Men‹

On December 18 and 19 the DSO releases the first two instalments of a three-part concert film entitled 'IM EXIL – VON GÖTTERN UND MENSCHEN' (In Exile – Of Gods and Men), featuring the orchestra and its music director Robin Ticciati in the Friedrichswerder Church, out in open nature and at Sisyphos Club. The Sounding Images production was directed by Frederic Wake-Walker.

The DSO and principal conductor Robin Ticciati will bring the year 2020 to a close with a radio concert on 20 December at 8.04 pm on rbbKultur. Ticciati conducts a manifold programme with music by Ludwig van Beethoven, Johannes Brahms and Antonio Vivaldi, counterpointed with jazz improvisations by Stephan Braun (cello) and Rolf Zielke (piano). The soloist in Vivaldi's violin concerto 'L'inquietudine' will be the world-renowned violinist Alina Ibragimova. The concert is presented by Shelly Kupferberg together with Robin Ticciati.

Robin Ticciati to become honorary professor at Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin

DSO’s Music Director Robin Ticciati is appointed Honorary Professor of Musical Conducting in the ›Voice‹ study program at Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin. He will take up his post in the winter semester 2020/2021 and receive his certificate at the premiere of William Walton’s one-act opera ›The Bear‹ on 3 March 2021, a joint project of the DSO and the School of Music.

Despite the cancellation of events due to the pandemic until the end of November, we are very pleased to be able to present to our audience some selected concerts as a video stream on the DSO PLAYER, on YouTube and Facebook.

Under its music director Robin Ticciati, the DSO played instrumental excerpts from Wagner's opera 'Götterdämmerung', preceded by Rachmaninoff's elegiac tone poem 'Die Toteninsel' and 'ionisches Licht' by contemporary composer Klaus Lang on November 21. In addition to the music, a space and lighting concept by British director Frederic Wake-Walker reinforced the overall dramaturgy of the multi-faceted programme.

The concert was broadcast live from the Berlin Philharmonie and remains available as video on demand on the DSO PLAYER. rbbKultur also broadcast the concert live as a video stream on its website and on its radio programme.

Radio concerts on 13 and 23 November

The DSO continues its concerts on the radio. On Friday, 13 November, a top-class chamber music ensemble of the DSO will give a radio concert with works by Ludwig van Beethoven, Rudolf Karel and Erwin Schulhoff, which Deutschlandfunk Kultur will broadcast live from 8.03 pm from the Jesus Christus Church in Dahlem.
