About the programme

Is there a more popular work in the world than Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony? Hailed as a revolutionary musical breakthrough – a chorus is heard in a symphony for the first time! – played thousands of times, now the Anthem of Europe, and last not least the reason why a CD has a playing time of exactly 74 minutes. Navid Kermani, writer and eminent intellectual German voice, will reflect on Beethoven’s humanism from today’s perspective. And composer Helen Grime interprets the »joy, beautiful spark of the divinity« in her ›Meditations on Joy‹.
