Symposium ›Afrodiaspora – Composing While Black‹

George E. Lewis is an American composer, musicologist, and trombonist. He is the Edwin H. Case Professor of American Music at Columbia University, and Artistic Director of the International Contemporary Ensemble. Lewis is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and the British Academy, as well as a member of the Akademie der Künste and the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians. Other honors include the Doris Duke Artist Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and a MacArthur Fellowship. He is the author of ›A Power Stronger Than Itself: The AACM and American Experimental Music‹ (University of Chicago Press) and, together with Harald Kisiedu, co-editor of ›Composing While Black: Afrodiasporische Neue Musik Heute/Afrodiasporic New Music Today‹ (Wolke Verlag).

Harald Kisiedu is a historical musicologist and Saxophonist who received his PhD in historical musicology from Columbia University. His research interests include Afrodiasporic classical and experimental Composers, jazz as a global phenomenon, Improvisation, music and politics, and Wagner. His writings have appeared in the WIRE, Grove Dictionary of American Music, Critical Studies in Improvisation, and Journal der Künste a. o. He has taught at the University of Music and Theatre ›Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy‹ Leipzig and the University of Applied Sciences Osnabrück's Institute of Music. He isthe author of ›European
