›The Passion of Octavius Catto‹ 15 June 2025

On Sunday, 15 June 2025, the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin (DSO)  sent a strong signal against discrimination and racism with an extraordinary programme. In “The Passion of Octavius Catto”, US pianist and composer Uri Caine tells the story of the racially motivated murder of civil rights activist Catto. Under the direction of André Raphel, the DSO performed the work - an impressive synthesis of classical, avant-garde, gospel and jazz - and gave its European premiere, together with a jazz trio led by Uri Caine (Mike Boone, bass, and Clarence Penn, drums), the singer Barbara Walker, the BiPoC vocal ensemble “A Song For You” and the Bundesjugendchor. The programme was meaningfully complemented by Jessie Montgomery's “Hymn for Everyone” and Mendelssohn's “Reformation Symphony”. The concert was a contribution to the “Orchestra for Democracy” campaign of the "Deutscher Bühnenverein" and was supported by the “Excellent Orchestra Landscape Germany” programme of the Federal Republic of Germany.
