On Sunday, 3 November 2024, the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin (DSO) performed the European premiere of Aaron Zigman's ‘Émigré’ in the Philharmonie. The modern oratorio, which has already enjoyed great success in New York and Shanghai, tells a moving story of Jewish exile in Shanghai during the Nazi era. Under the direction of conductor Long Yu, the DSO was joined by a prominent ensemble of singers and the Rundfunkchor Berlin. The evening was opened by Hetty Berg, Director of the Jewish Museum Berlin. A discussion concert with a DSO string quartet and exile music specialist Sophie Fetthauer had already taken place there in the W. Michael Blumenthal Academy on Thursday, 31 October 2024, reflecting on the historical background of the oratorio's plot. [Credits: Jakob Tillmann]
