We, the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, declare our full solidarity with Lahav Shani and the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra in light of their last-minute cancellation by the Flanders Festival Ghent!

Lahav Shani has repeatedly and unequivocally spoken out in favour of reconciliation, peace and humanitarian values in the past. He sees music as a bridge between cultures and as a space for open dialogue, mutual understanding and respect – even in times of political conflict. Such a voice must neither be marginalised nor exploited.

We strongly condemn the decision of the Flanders Festival Ghent. The cancellation not only crosses the line of artistic freedom, but also represents a blanket suspicion based solely on origin or perceived affiliation. It violates the fundamental democratic values that we all hold dear: diversity, freedom of expression, cultural openness.

We call on those responsible for the Flanders Festival Ghent to reconsider their decision and allow the concert to take place! Art should remain a space for open exchange. Culture must not be exploited, but must fulfil its mission: to promote understanding, respect and diversity. Send a clear message – for cultural openness, against anti-Semitism and all forms of exclusion and discrimination.
