About the programme
Unrequited love, opium intoxication, madness, and a witches’ sabbath – you could hardly wish for more drama and high tension in a classical subscription concert at the Philharmonie. It is not for nothing that Hector Berlioz’ grandiose ›Symphonie fantastique‹ is something out of the ordinary in the repertoire. With this work, the composer not only created of the most important pieces of Romantic music of all – he also established the distinct genre of program music in the 19th century. Inspired by the composer’s eartbreak, the symphony tells its story in a way that is more stirring, disturbing, sad, and creepy than almost any other piece of music in the world.
