Zum Konzert

Despite the Stalinist reign of terror, Sergei Prokofiev returned from exile to his homeland for good in 1936. Shortly before, he had written his Second Violin Concerto, mild music that was intended to embody a »new simplicity« – and triumphed with it. John Williams doubted whether he was the right composer for Spielberg’s ›Schindler’s List‹ – but then created masterly melodies that illustrate both the tragedy of the story and the tender aspects of Jewish life amid the horrors of the 1930s and 1940s. Thomas Larcher has dedicated his Second Symphony to the thousands who have drowned in the Mediterranean – and in the process tried, as Prokofiev once did, to find a new tonal language.
