Rosa Parks – »You must never be fearful ...«

Three extraordinary women are the centre of the eponymous concert series. At the Villa Elisabeth, their stories, work and influence are brought to life on three evenings – in stories by three authors and experts and in compositions that mirror the circumstances of the protagonists’ lives and times.

The second concert, on 6 December 2026, presents Rosa Parks (1913–2005), whose courageous but ordinary protest against racism and unequal treatment in 1955 became a founding moment of the American civil rights movement. Her refusal to give up her seat on the bus for a white man at a time of segregation set a movement in motion that ultimately led to the abolition of the racist Jim Crow Laws. Her story is told by the musicologist, journalist and musician Neneh Sowe. 

*The title was chosen by Black composer Henry Thacker Burleigh and is retained out of respect for the historical work, even though it is outdated and discriminatory.
