Zum Konzert

She published under a male pseudonym to get noticed at all: The brilliant composer Charlotte Sohy was one of those women who were greatly admired by their contemporaries but had to trick their way into the public sphere. Her ›Thème varié‹ is one of the most beautiful works in her oeuvre: Written after World War I, she was celebrating here all her talent as a composer. In his Double Concerto, Johannes Brahms let opposites meet: The cello opens powerfully, and the violin responds empathetically – in the dreamy Andante the two finally come together in an idyll. His early First Serenade, by contrast, still sounds like a classical divertimento: the Allegro dances, the Rondo gallops, the Adagio archaises into the Minuet – and makes for enormous fun.
