About the programme

This work is monumental and stands like a monolith within the repertoire. Busoni’s Piano Concerto is a fivemovement, romantic symphony for large orchestra with six-part male choir and obbligato piano, and the solo part is so extraordinarily difficult to play that only the most accomplished pianists are capable of mastering it. Busoni set new standards with this opus – not only in terms of the technical and musical demands on the performers, but also in terms of length. The rarely performed piece turns into an event when played by pianist Benjamin Grosvenor.
