About the programme

Fluttering, shimmering, whirring, and buzzing! Night forest, birds calling. A colourful tangle of strange sounds – Andrea Tarrodi’s ›Birds of Paradise‹ is a strong opening to a strong programme that Finnish conductor Dalia Stasevska has chosen for her DSO debut at the Philharmonie concert hall. Tarrodi’s music has fascinated her for many years. She finds in it »a kind of Nordic mysticism and tone  colours« that remind her of Sibelius. The latter’s Fifth Symphony then logically comes at the end of the programme, which features another »Rising Star« – the soprano Aphrodite Patoulidou. The elegance and virtuosity of her voice finds itself a magical playground in Benjamin Britten’s surreal orchestral songs ›Les illuminations‹.
