About the programme
In March 2014, the Tagesspiegel daily newspaper called the young Santtu-Matias Rouvali a »Finn with fire«. He had studied with legendary conducting teacher Jorma Panula and had just given his ›Debut‹ concert with the DSO. Since then, Rouvali has had a remarkable career that has taken him to the Philharmonia Orchestra in London as Principal Conductor. At his third DSO concert, he unleashes his magical sound with Shostakovich’s gripping Tenth Symphony. Written in 1953, shortly after Stalin’s death, it comes across as a haunting, harrowing, harsh, yet equally powerful and stirring reckoning with the dictator who had caused the composer years of fear and resignation.
