About the programme
Richard Strauss’ symphonic poem ›Don Quixote‹ is as legendary as its tragicomic hero from Spanish literature – an undisputed masterpiece and impressive example of musical storytelling. In it, Strauss pours Cervantes’ two-part novella into just 40 minutes of sound and creates a piece that is exceptionally modern for its time. But it gets even better: for orchestras, ›Don Quixote‹ is a real pleasure to play. And to ensure that this is conveyed with lasting effect, the evening is accompanied by satirist Oliver Kalkofe as author and narrator who provides a whole new perspective on the work.
