Heroines: Friedl Dicker-Brandeis

Ania Vegry studied at the University of Music, Drama, and Media in Hanover with Christiane Iven and Charlotte Lehmann, as well as in Madrid with Teresa Berganza.

While still a student, she became a permanent member of the ensemble at the Hanover State Opera, where she performed numerous roles, including Susanna in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro, for which she was nominated as Young Singer of the Year by Opernwelt magazine. In addition to other roles from the standard opera repertoire, such as Ännchen in Weber's Der Freischütz, Puccini's Musetta in La Bohème, and Cunegonde in Bernstein's Candide, she has also performed numerous roles from the contemporary repertoire.

She is currently engaged at the Anhaltisches Theater Dessau. Guest engagements have taken Vegry to the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, the Komische Oper Berlin, the Hamburg State Opera, the Alte Oper Frankfurt, and the Opéra Garnier in Paris, as well as to renowned festivals. She regularly gives recitals and performs with orchestras such as the SWR Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, and the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra. In past projects, Vegry has worked with conductors such as Kent Nagano, Joana Mallwitz, Marc Albrecht, and Helmuth Rilling.

Vegry has repeatedly recorded opera arias and song cycles for a number of German radio stations. She has championed the oeuvre of Florian Leopold Gassmann, first having concert and opera arias penned by him published and then recording them with the NDR Radiophilharmonie under the baton of David Stern for the CPO label. In close collaboration with the publishing house Boosey & Hawkes, Vegry also realized the first complete recording of the songs of the Polish-Jewish composer Szymon Laks in 2021, which was released in June 2021 on the EDA label.
