About the concert

George Walker was the first African American composer to be awarded the coveted Pulitzer Prize. His ›Lyric for Strings‹ is dedicated to the memory of his enslaved grandmother, reflecting both loss and hope. Richard Strauss’s opulent ›Alpine Symphony‹ then tells an adventurous story of glaciers, joy at the summit, dangers – and ultimately peace.
