22.4. and 23.4.: Concerts at the Philharmonie
On the weekend after Easter, the DSO and Robin Ticciati bring their alpine film programme from 'An Alpine Symphony' with mountaineering legend Reinhold Messner live to the stage at the Philharmonie. On 22 and 23 April, Richard Strauss' famous tone poem accompanies the audience into the mountains, past flowery meadows, through thickets and undergrowth, over alpine pastures and glaciers to the summit and finally to the thunderstorm-ridden descent. Strauss interwove his musical descriptions with inner experience, with philosophical subtexts on the artist's existence and the "worship of eternal, glorious nature" (Strauss). In between, Reinhold Messner provides insights into the physical as well as psychological borderline experiences of his mountain ascents and tells of extreme situations, the perception of nature and his mental states in the night before setting out, during the conquest of the summit, during the long, arduous descent and the exhausted, desireless return home.
21.4.: Lecture with chamber music
On 21 April, there will be the opportunity to learn more about the mountaineer and his story in the concert hall on Hardenbergstraße. In his lecture 'ÜberLeben' (About Life/Survive), Reinhold Messner will outline his path from South Tyrolean mountain boy to the greatest adventurer of our time, accompanied musically by a prominent ensemble of DSO members. The programme includes the Romance for Horn and String Quartet by the Dvořák student, folk music collector and famous alpinist Leone Sinigaglia, who was the first Italian to conquer the Dolomites, as well as works by Saverio Mercadante, Alexandre Tansman and Richard Strauss and unusual arrangements from the 'Alpine Symphony' and 'Wandrers Nachtlied' by Schubert for alphorn and trombones.
In Conversation: Robin Ticciati and Reinhold Messner
Principal conductor Robin Ticciati spoke with Reinhold Messner about physical and psychological borderline experiences, nature and the music of Strauss during the filming of the film project 'An Alpine Symphony' last year.
Living for the Mountains
On his expeditions, the South Tyrolean Reinhold Messner has climbed all 14 eight-thousanders and numerous other peaks on the most difficult routes and sometimes single-handedly, as well as crossing the Gobi Desert and Antarctica. With his foundation, the Messner Mountain Foundation, he supports peoples in the mountains of the Himalayas, Karakorum, the Hindu Kush, the Andes or the Caucasus. In more than fifty books, a dozen films, in lectures, in the Messner Mountain Museum in the mountains of South Tyrol and the Messner Mountain Heritage chain of museums in various mountains around the world, Messner recounts his experiences and advocates for the sustainable narrative of traditional alpinism.
