About the programme

Gustav Mahler’s Fifth Symphony is a truly gigantic piece of music. And it is an important turning point in the work of the brilliant composer: There are no longer movements shaped by vocals as in his earlier symphonies, but a clear commitment to pure instrumental music. A composition in three sections, four keys, five movements – full of passion, emotional outbursts, and at the centre a touching message: a declaration of love to his wife Alma, whose opulent, dazzling, labyrinthine life seems like a template for her husband’s Fifth.
