Tugan Sokhiev to become DSO Berlin’s new Music Director

Tugan Sokhiev is the new Principal Conductor and Artistic Director of the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin (DSO). In September 2012 he will formally assume his post. Since the start of the 2010|11 season, he has been holding the title of Music Director Designate.

On several occasions he already conducted his future orchestra, for the first time, aged 25, at the beginning of 2003 in the series ›Debüt im Deutschlandradio Kultur‹. In November 2007, he conducted a highly successful performance of Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances and two years later, on 6 December 2009, he made an indelible impression likewise with his interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony. DSO's 2011|2012 concert seasons finds him conducting three concert programmes exploring music from french, russian, german and english composers.

The series ›Grenzwege‹ (Border Paths) is the 2011|2012 season’s central thematic focus. Experiences and situations at the edge of the abyss will be explored in six concerts of symphonic works, oratorios and operas in concert performance, conducted by Ingo Metzmacher, Robert Spano, Ton Koopman, Kent Nagano, Hans Graf and Sir Roger Norrington. The pieces will lead us through unfamiliar terrain and give expression to inner and outer conflict.
